Hello everyone! I hope you have all had more fabulous weeks than the thought of the Democratic National Convention reenacted by William Shatner impersonators.
Well, we are getting close to the release of Life is a Roller Derby Run by a Sphinx and so this week I wanted to give you a quick taste of what is to come. So for your reading pleasure, ripped directly from the pages of my next book, is Chapter 27: Cookie Monster.

27. Cookie Monster
Some children are lovely little gifts from heaven. Other
kids are more like trials sent to test parents’ perseverance, cunning and
ability to get crayon off of a variety of surfaces.
I was more of the latter; I pretended
to be a dinosaur during church, thought I was a Power Ranger and World Wrestling
Federation wrestler all rolled into one (that poor furniture) and built very
elaborate spaceships from everyday items and sometimes essential machine parts.
Not only was I handful, I was a rather
clever one. I had learned to read at an early age and by the time I turned four
I already had most of the Nancy Drew,
The Boxcar Children and The Hardy Boys under my literary belt.
Add in the fact that I watched as many episodes of Murder, She Wrote and Matlock
as I could find, and I was a regular criminal mastermind in the making. I
gobbled up mystery stories faster than the newest Lone Ranger movie bombed and was forgotten.

| Out soon!!! |
Of course, with my rambunctious little
brain, I began to wonder if I could pull of a caper that not even Nancy Drew or
Jessica Fletcher could solve!
I plotted, I planned, I drew
schematics, I built models of vaults and banks out of Legos.
Now keep in mind, at four years old you really don’t have to
have an exact goal in mind. I wasn’t out to steal the Hope Diamond or ransack a
museum for priceless art. I was just plotting crime in general.
My parents, knowing I lacked the income
and resources to pull off a liquor store robbery, much less a fantastical
heist, weren’t too concerned about my little ‘flights of fancy’ into the
heinous world of crime.
I knew that my plans could succeed, as
a Brain without a Pinky could, if only I had a goal to focus them on.
Then came the day my mother made her
wonderfully delicious peanut-butter-chocolate-chip cookies. These cookies are
melt-in-your-mouth good. If we could give these cookies out to every world
leader simultaneously, there would be World Peace, because it’s impossible to
feel aggressive or angry while eating one.
She baked an entire batch in the
afternoon, and I had been granted one cookie. The rest, she informed me, would
have to wait until after dinner. I tried to reason with her, dinner was a full
two hours away. My pleas went unanswered. I watched sorrowfully as my mom put
every remaining cookie into the giant strawberry shaped cookie jar far back on
the kitchen counter and wandered off to do something else.
I stood in the kitchen staring daggers at that cookie jar,
reveling in how unfair the situation was. I could still smell the cookies, and
still had the taste of peanut butter and chocolate in my mouth.
Suddenly, it hit me like a Mac truck hits a sleeping
armadillo, this is what I had been scheming for! This was my crime of the
century! Well… at least crime of the day… let’s be real here.
I ran back to my room digging through my catapult designs,
ideas for a mind-control laser and blueprints of someone else’s house that I
had found while playing outside one day. None of it seemed to help my cookie
situation.
I snuck back towards the kitchen to do some reconnaissance.
Crawling, army-style on my belly, I crept down the hallway, listening intently
for any adults. No one was about. I stood up and wandered towards the kitchen
counter, realizing that I was far shorter than it was and the cookie jar was
all the way back on the counter near the wall.nMy thoughts turned to the
kitchen chairs, which could be drug over, but I needed to determine where my
mom was first, in case the noise would alert her.
I found my mom in the living room folding clothing. I
nonchalantly wandered in, “Hi mom, you don’t have any reason to go to the
kitchen anytime soon do you?”
My mother’s eyes narrowed, “Why?”
“No reason,” I said as I darted away, congratulating myself
on not making her suspicious at all.
Back in the kitchen, I planned my route of entry. The chair
would be too loud to drag, but if I opened the drawers like stairs, I could
probably climb up relatively easily.
I wandered back down towards my mother, who, still folding
clothes, was now surely listening intently for something to explode. Again, as
casually as I could, I asked, “Hey mom, you don’t have a reason to be in the
kitchen, right?”
My mom blinked at me a couple of times, “Is there something
on fire in the kitchen? Should I be in the kitchen right now?”
“Nope! Was just wondering!” I said, skipping back down the
hallway, again impressed with my own dramatic non-mom-worrying skills.
I checked to make sure the coast was clear, and then I
opened the first drawer. I looked around; no one seemed to be rushing down the
hall. I slid open the second drawer, nothing. I flung the remaining drawers
open with wild abandon and stepped up onto the counter.
There it was, the strawberry cookie jar, in all its red
glory.
I lifted the lid and found a veritable dragon’s hoard of
amazing luscious little treats inside.
I’ve never been a dainty person. The cookie carnage I
unleashed would have made the Cookie Monster seem civilized by comparison. I
stuffed, I crammed, I smeared. I had chocolate on my face, cookie crumbs in my
hair and peanut butter residue on every piece of clothing I was wearing. The
spoils of my crime were sweet, soft and delicious.
I was about halfway through enjoying cookie number seven
when I heard it, “Allison, what are you doing on the counter?”
Turning, my mouth absolutely stuffed
with cookie, I blinked at my mother. How had she caught me? I had made sure to
fool her into thinking that nothing was wrong in the kitchen! Why was she
here!? There was still thirty minutes until dinner!
She stood, hands on hips, surveying the
disastrous scene, “Allison, did you eat cookies out of the cookie jar?”
I blinked. Interrogation was not
something that Nancy Drew, Jessica Fletcher or any of the others had ever
prepared me for. Mostly they just caught the criminal, the criminal confessed
and then they would get a sad, disappointed look from Angela Lansbury. I knew
my mother’s punishment wouldn’t be a sad, sympathetic, yet also disappointed
look. So I came up with the best Hail-Mary answer I could think up.
“No!” bits of cookie spraying from my
mouth, “No! It wasn’t me!”
My mother let out a tiny snort, then
collected herself again and said, “Now,” small amount of laughter, followed by
a throat clearing, “I’m going to ask you again. Did you eat the cookies?”
Don’t ask me why, even at the age of
four I knew there was no logical escape, and yet, I found myself answering,
“Nope! Wasn’t me!”
My mother instructed me to come down
off the counter and stand there for a minute, she would be right back. I
obediently, for once, climbed off of the counter and stood, waiting for my
punishment as my mom took long strides towards the hallway.
I realize that she was trying to hide
the fact that she was laughing, but I could still hear her. To this day, I will
never forget her pained attempts to be a seriously upset parent as she snorted
out from behind the wall, “Go,” chuckle, “to your room! Bahahahahahaha!”
So what crumbs of knowledge can be
extracted from the cookie jar of experience?
1. Laughter may delay punishment, but the punishment is
still forthcoming.
2. If your child is planning heists at the age of four, you
might want to pay closer attention to her behavior.
3. Sometimes the best-laid plans end with cookies and
grounding.

Sometimes Life...
Hello everyone! I hope you have all had a lovely past few months!
I'm afraid I have been a little more than errant in posting here. To adequately describe my life the last four months, I must impart the wisdom of a five year old.
I was wandering through the grocery store around a year ago, when I happened to run across this little boy and his mom. I really didn't catch much of their conversation, but as I passed them, this little boy turned to his mom and said, "You know... Sometimes life just gives you the taco poops."
That little munchkin in a Superman t-shirt somehow managed to state an absolute truism about life; Sometimes life just gives you the taco poops.
The combination of moving (again), working three jobs and going to grad school full time has meant that I have let a lot of things slide in the past few months. This blog was one of them. And while I can't promise that I will post with regularity again, I can promise that I will attempt not to leave a several month gap in between posts.
So until next time, which I hope will be soon, everyone have a fabulous time and don't let life's taco poops catch you as they caught me!
As always, my adventures can be followed on Facebook, Twitter and now Instagram!

Ch-ch-ch-changes!
Hello everyone! I hope your weeks have been more fantastic than the thought of a thousand free-range lemmings synchronized diving to Queen's Don't Stop Me Now!
Sadly, that could accurately describe my life right now, which is why this post is so late. My bad. But maybe you'll cut me a little slack. You see in the past two weeks I have accepted a position at a graduate school in Arizona, sold my truck, bought a car, quit my job, had to find a new place to live, begun the packing process and basically am about three seconds away from going utterly and completely insane.
The picture to the right is what my apartment currently looks like.
Yes indeed, that mass of boxes and a nearly buried bookcase basically sums up my earthly possessions. At this point I am truly sad that there is no incredible transporter room like on the Enterprise that can beam my belongings directly to Arizona. Nerd sigh.
I promise that when I move and get settled in, I will begin posting again with more regularity. I also swear I will get back to posting on Case (Un)Managed, but with life currently in it's unmanageable state, I'm afraid I have had to temporarily let that one sit for a second as well.
So the next time I post, if everything goes according to plan, I will be posting from Arizona. Of course for that to happen I need to get everything I own into the back of a truck and then somehow convince my two agoraphobic cats that spending a couple days cooped up in a vehicle listening to me belt 80's music isn't so bad.
Wish me luck.
In other news, Free the Shorts! has had a successful run so far! As I write this post it is sitting at #1 on Amazon Kindle's Humor and Entertainment Essays list! Here are what the reader reviews are saying thus far:
"...it's worth a Five-Star rating, hands down."
"It's hard to be grumpy or continue to have a bad day if you read anything Allison writes- she is an absolute laugh riot"
"Hahahahaha. So good I went right out and bought the next book."
"Hilarious! I loved the HULK SMASH chapter and the part about the raccoon. Allison Hawn is very funny."
Thank you to everyone who has read a copy so far! If you haven't yet, go grab your free copy and give it a read! If you enjoy it, post a review!
As always I can be found on Facebook and Twitter and my books can be found here!

Free the Shorts!
Hello all! I hope your weeks have been more fantastic than the thought of the Chipmunks singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight!"
Well it is out! Free the Shorts! is, as the title would imply, free on Amazon and Barnes & Noble!
This collection includes six stories, four brand new stories and two from my previous two books. It's a great deal considering the only thing it's going to cost you is a few KB's of memory on your phone, computer, e-reader! Heck, it would even fit on a floppy disk!
So go snatch up your copy! If you enjoy it, do a poor author a favor and leave a review!
In other news Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus received yet another five star review! Reader Sarodnap writes, "Lovely read."
To see what's so lovely about it check it out here!
As always, I am fairly easily found on Facebook and Twitter (@AllisonHawn)! Come say hello!

Deja Moo... The Feeling I've Heard This Bull Before
Hello all! I hope everyone has had a week that is better than the thought of wombats synchronized swimming to Ballroom Blitz!
Alright, so I am just going to get this out of the way. As a resident Spokanite I should probably say a few things about this whole Rachel Dolezal thing, mostly because non-Spokanites won't stop asking me about it.
I find it a little funny that right before this whole thing blew up I wrote a piece on this blog about cultural appropriation. No seriously, scroll down, it's the post right below this one.
Just in case you need a refresher however, here is that lovely definition of cultural appropriation again:
Keeping that in mind, here are the points I would like to make:
1. No one is denying that Rachel Dolezal did a lot of work in the area of equality. The conundrum is that she trampled equality and was deceitful in doing so. You can't claim to be "culturally appropriating for equality" anymore than you can claim to be "bombing for peace."
2. No one in Spokane is mistaking Dolezal's self labeled transracial, which is not really a viable thing actually, with Caitlyn Jenner's transgender transition (how many times can I fit "trans" into one sentence). That was a comparison ya'll outside of Spokane developed and ran with. For the record, no, they are not the same, and no one (outside of our news media, which is weird anyways) in Spokane believes they are the same.
3. Spokane is a weird city. No, seriously, the first headline on the Spokane local news that I read this morning was "Spokane pizza delivery killer denied early release." Honestly, there are so many things in Spokane that could make international news, we're just shocked that the Rachel Dolezal mess was what made it.
So if I've satisfied all the news scandal interest I do have a quick announcement to make. While I work on edits for my third book Life is a Roller Derby Run by a Sphinx, I have decided to release a little collection of stories called Free the Shorts!
This collection will feature four new stories and two stories, one each from my previous books. The best part, it's going to be free! That's right, zero dollars and zero cents!
If the internet deities smiled upon me it will up within the next week or so, watch for more announcements here, on my Facebook and Twitter (@AllisonHawn).

Putting All Your Chips On The Table
Well hello all! I hope everyone has had a more marvelous week
than the thought of a thousand cacti arranged to form the Millennium Falcon.
As a resident Spokanite, I haven't really seen sunlight since Tinkerbell was saying, "In color!" before the start of every Disney film.
Is that an exaggeration? Maybe, but having just survived another bone-chilling winter, I was ready for some sun.
I snagged the box of wine to take up to the front desk, but paused when, from an outside door that had been propped open, a schnockered looking man entered.
When he saw me holding the box of wine he gave me a shocked look worthy of a daytime soap opera and quickly exited again.
This past week I had the awesome chance to go toodle around
Arizona for a few days (which is why I have been a tad lax on updates, apologies).
Arizona is an wondrous place, full of sunshine, cacti and
really odd street names (Bloody Basin Road and Bee King Road among them).
As a resident Spokanite, I haven't really seen sunlight since Tinkerbell was saying, "In color!" before the start of every Disney film.
Is that an exaggeration? Maybe, but having just survived another bone-chilling winter, I was ready for some sun.
I was also exceedingly ready for a break from work. Don't
get me wrong, I love my clients, but you can only say, "Stop licking the
walls!" and, "Take those panties off of your head!" so many times before it begins
to wear on your little grey cells.
I was finally getting away from it all... or so I thought.
Just because I'm on vacation does not mean that I wish to stop
working out, so I was overjoyed to find that the hotel in Arizona my mother, grandmother
and I were staying in had a workout area.
I was far less overjoyed when I opened the door to their mini-gym and was met by a wave of body odor and booze. No one was in there at that exact
moment, but there was a super-classy box of chardonnay sitting on top of the
weight bench with a myriad of potato chips surrounding it like some kind of
shrine to gluttony.
I snagged the box of wine to take up to the front desk, but paused when, from an outside door that had been propped open, a schnockered looking man entered.
When he saw me holding the box of wine he gave me a shocked look worthy of a daytime soap opera and quickly exited again.
I took the box of wine to the front desk who said they would
take care of it.
The next morning, in an insane rash of optimism, I decided to try the workout room again. I knew I should have just gone running when I opened the door and was slapped in the face by body odor, booze and the additional fragrance of urine.
The next morning, in an insane rash of optimism, I decided to try the workout room again. I knew I should have just gone running when I opened the door and was slapped in the face by body odor, booze and the additional fragrance of urine.
I peered around the corner and found myself looking at the
same individual I had previously spotted. Wolfing down chips with one hand and
downing fowl smelling rum and cheap wine as his chasers, the man lounged on the weight
equipment staring at the TV screen.
"Hey bud!" I said.
He slowly turned as I continued, "Are you supposed to
be in here?"
His mouth full of chips and dank smelling rum he blearily
looked at me, looked down at his chips, and then offered them to me.
I just shook my head and headed for the front desk to inform
them that they had failed to get rid of their unregistered guest.
What lessons did I learn from my little Arizona adventure?
1. When you are caught breaking into a hotel's weight room
to settle in to drink and pee, there is no amount of chips you can use to
barter yourself out of that situation.
2. There is no taking a vacation from a bizarre life.

Hello all! I hope your weeks have been more fantastic than the thought of a million elves doing the Truffle Shuffle to 'Jingle Bell Rock!'
Just a quick reminder, this month half of my profits from "Life is a Pirate Ship Run by a Velociraptor" and "Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus" will be going to help the SpokAnimal!
So buy a book and know you're helping fuzzies like Cinnamon here stay safe this holiday season. By the way, if anyone is looking for a lovable little ball of fluff, Cinnamon is currently up for adoption! So go snag this little eight-month-old guy!
Okay, I'll stop torturing you all with adorable kittens.
So as it turns out, being an author is not nearly as introverted a position as one would think. Good thing I'm only part hermit, because this show is going on the road!
I am excited to announce the first two stops on my winter book tour!
Saturday, December 20th (Yes, tomorrow, super late notice, but if you follow me on Facebook you'd have heard about it!) I will be at Monkeyboy Books, in Spokane, at 6:00 pm for a signing and reading! This is a joint event, as I will be joined by Spokane poet Mark Strutton and his gritty and poignant verses.
Then Sunday, January 11th at 3:00 pm I will be at Hyde Park Books in Boise, Idaho!
So if you're in Boise, come join us for some coffee, conversation and me making an absolute fool out of myself (which is what I tend to do in public).

You Can't Cage A "Free Spirit"
Hello all, I hope you have all had a more fabulous week than the thought of a battle between Donald Trump's toupee and a weasel!
First off I now have a release date for my second book!!! "Life is a Pirate Ship Run by a Velociraptor" will be sailing into a bookstore or online vendor near you on September 7th!!!
If you want updates about the book, please check out the Facebook page my awesome publisher, Sweatshoppe Publications, has put together here.
For those of you who don't know, this month I took a position as the head of security for the largest homeless shelter in Spokane.
Basically if I were to describe my job in a nutshell it would be, "I spend all day never knowing whether I will next be faced with someone who made a knife out of salad tongs or have to settle an argument between a man and the voices in his head."
It's an adventure and a half.
I've only been working there a month, but I already have enough fascinating and interesting moments to probably fill another two, or thirteen, books.
This past week, however, I had a "once in a great while" occurrence. I was sitting in my office writing up a report on another incident involving someone wearing pizza boxes as "armor" and trying to pick fights, when there was a knock in my door.
I opened the door to find one of our older clients who was looking shamefully at the floor. I had barely said "Hi" when he blurted out with, "I was smoking pot in the courtyard, I'll see you at sanctions next week."
I blinked as he wandered out. He had just admitted to something I probably would not have caught him doing and had kicked himself out. If they all did this my job would be ninety times easier.
Every week we hold a sanctions meeting, which is for patrons who have been banned to come in and give their side of the story. We then weigh their side of things and can adjust the length person's ban if need be. We had already decided to let this guy back in for willfully admitting his wrongdoing, but we still heard him out.
He sat in the chair looking extremely apologetic as he again and again said, "I know I shouldn't have, it was stupid."
We all thanked him for being willing to take responsibility for his actions. Then, suddenly, he turned to me, held up his hand and said, "Ma'am, you need to understand, I'm a free spirit, I don't follow the law."
I just shrugged as he continued, "I don't follow the rules ma'am, I'm a bad-boy, I just run with the wind, I can't be caged."
It took everything within me to not burst out laughing as I said, "I will remember that. Remember, if you're going to be a "bad-boy" you should do so at least two blocks away from our building, ok?"
He nodded, "Oh, of course! But remember, I'm a bad-boy."
"I'll remember, your bad-boy status is safe."
What lessons can be pulled from this little experience?
1. "Bad-boy" has now been redefined to someone who feels too much guilt after doing something wrong and turns themselves in.
2. You can't cage a "free spirit." That's okay, though, as the "free spirit" is apparently likely to cage themselves.
Would anyone else like to redefine a term or two for me this week?
Don't forget, you can always find me on Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads!

The Smorgasbord Post
Hello all! I hope everyone's day is going better than the thought of a thousand purple gorillas performing a rendition of "Hamlet" set to cabaret music!!!
So today's post is a bit of a conglomeration of things, a Franken-post if you will.
First, "Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus" has been released onto the Kindle! Check it out all you digital reading fans!
I also just planned my first ever book signing at Monkeyboy Books on Saturday, June 8th from 1 to 3 P.M. If you happen to be in Spokane, come say hi and get your copy of "Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus" signed!!! (If you're extra nice, I might even attempt to draw you a dinosaur, or a sheep, or something that may end up resembling both a dinosaur and a sheep.)
In any case, if you've never been to Monkeyboy Books, you should definitely take a gander at it. It has to be one of the most adorable, cozy, little bookshops I've wandered through for quite some time.
See, doesn't that just look cozy as all get out? Also, the shop owner, Marina, was gracious enough not to call for the Mental Health Professionals when I found a copy of "Robin Hood" in her shop and did a very excited, partially coffee induced, happy dance.
So in my perusing of the literary world, I ran into a funny little book that I feel deserves some mention.
Edmund McCombs' book "Stuck at Seven (While Awkwardly Aiming for Ten)" not only has the best picture of an absolutely horrified little kid on the front of it, but is a very frank, unashamed collection of short stories that many people can relate to. Covering everything from schoolyard bullies to bad bosses, Edmund's stories will make you chuckle as he takes you from one awkward situation to the next.
In other news, I really, really, really want one of these:
I know that has nothing to do with the price of pie, but I spent a lot of time thinking of all the places, things, people, I could run over in one of those. Wouldn't it be fantastic to to go down a hill in one of these?
Anyways, this is probably a sign that Friday has officially eaten my brain and I should stop writing. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
As always feel free to follow my swashbuckling exploits on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads!!!

It's Out!!!
Hello ladies, gentlemen and any possible resurrected dinosaurs that I'm hoping exist! I have exciting news! My book, "Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus," was released early and is available now!
That's right, by clicking on this handy-dandy link (Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus) the internet (which is steered and controlled by gremlins) will whisk you away to the enchanted land of Amazon.com where, as of this morning, the book magically appeared!
Yes, I am just as surprised as all of you, as I thought I would have to continue giving you little fortune cookie-esque hints about the book until the printing presses could churn out the final copies. Apparently, however, the printing presses the publishing company uses were given the machine version of caffeine, and so the book is out now!
As always, I want to hear from you all. Feel free to leave me questions, comments, existential quandaries here, on my Facebook page (Facebook Me!) or via Twitter (Tweet Me!).

Look! Something Shiny!
Good morning friends, readers and anyone else who happens upon this page while attempting to find pictures of adorable cats!
I received this yesterday and was just so darn-tootin' excited that I had to show you all!
Look my, up until now, naked book has a cover!
Thanks to the marvelous design by Paul Brand and the talented artistry of Anthony Carpenter, no one has to simply look at a boring white title page when my book is released on May 20! Instead they can feast their eyes upon this eclectic work of art that is sure to simultaneously delight and bewilder the masses at large!
Thank you both for your hard work and willingness to join me in the land of the weird!
